BAD EDUCATION
Two young men who were school mates in the
1960’s reconnect in the 1980’s and recollect about
their Catholic education in Franco-era Spain. Gael
Garcia Bernal plays a trio of personalities in this
sexually charged tale of homosexuality, pedophilia
and loathsome secrets. At varying points in the film
you will see him as Angel, Juan, and Zahara, all
intriguing facets of a man living a complicated life
who returns to his closest friend, Enrique Goded
(Fele Martinez), who is now a successful film
director in Spain.

Written and directed by Pedro Almodovar, the work
is said to be loosely based on his personal
experiences as a child.

The world premier of the film was the Cannes Film
Festival in May of 2004. Since picked up by Sony
Pictures Classics for distribution, it is in limited
engagement in the United States. Although filmed
in Spanish, it is fully subtitled in English.
Mary's comments
Explicit and daring, director Almodovar
takes a tiger by the tail and comes away
looking unscathed. The sexual topics in
question were handled bravely with no
apology. Gael Bernal is excellent, carrying
the burden of such a heavy topic so well.

Brenda's comments
A thriller as well as a drama. Be prepared
for a deep look into the heart and soul of a
very dark character as Gael Bernal
transitions into his various personas. A
very catchy intro scene captures the
audience before they are even settled in for
the movie. Some rough topic are met face
on, but with style. A very well told, adult
story.
