BARBERSHOP 2: BACK IN BUSINESS
Back at Calvin's barbershop things are pretty
much as we left them last year. The principals
Calvin (Ice Cube), Eddie (Cedric the
Entertainer), Terrie (Eve), Jimmy (Sean Patrick
Thomas), Isaac (Troy Garity) and Dinka
(Leonard Earl Howze) are all standing around
waiting for the next customer. And it's in that
down time that most of the best discussions
transpire. In this chapter, it's not just the cash
flow that's the primary problem, but the big,
super- dooper franchise barbershop that has
opened right across the street from Calvin's.
About as far removed from the old shop as you
can get, the customers flock to the shiny new
establishment like moths to a flame. Or,
roaches to a dumpster on the Southside of
Chicago.
There are neighborhood good guys to relate to
and bad guys to hate, and a little romance in
the shop for good measure, something for
everyone. But best of all, there is a little
neighborhood barbershop where everyone
can be heard.
Mary's Comments
Very enjoyable, feel good story. We know
all along what will happen, but that's all
right, it makes a good tale. The old gang is
doing well and that's what really counts.
Cedric's Eddie is great, he's wise and a
realist, willing to tell it like it is. And he
never minces his words. He does, however,
mumble some of them, making him a bit
hard to understand at times.
Brenda's Comments
It's always fun when the bad guys take a
beating and the bad haircut in this movie is
better than a beating. Not as clever as the
first installation, but entertaining. Cedric is
very good as Eddie, the aging barber stuck
in the 70's. Good chemistry, but let's hope
that a Barbershop 3 is not on the horizon. It
could get old as fast as Cedric's graying
afro.
