BEAUTY SHOP
You are in for more than a quick "comb-out" when
you embark on this journey into the world of beauty
shop culture. Hairstylist Gina Norris (Queen Latifah)
has had it with working at the trendy salon owned
and micromanaged by the flamboyant Jorge
Christophe (Kevin Bacon). With a lot of luck at the
bank, and plenty of sweat equity, she almost
magically transforms a dinosaur of a beauty shop
into a Cinderella-esque hair salon. The staff of
stylists is a delight in itself, playing off of each other
with perfect timing (Alicia Silverstone, Andie
MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, and Mena Suvari). And a
little, exotic, love interest is on call in the form of Joe
(Djimon Hounsou), capable handyman and
accomplished musician. The fact that he resides
right above the shop seems more than convenient.
From a story authored by Elizabeth Hunter comes
this rollicking screenplay by Kate Lanier. The genre
is definitely comedy, but there is enough drama to
keep the story moving along quite nicely. Director
Billie Woodruff is at the helm and sees that the
banter in the shop saturates the air space. Some
very clever dialogue gives us the feel of shop
politics, as the ladies share their opinions on a wide
variety of subjects.

Most of the females in the audience know that when you pass through the door and into a salon,
you have crossed into another dimension. Males will either feel out of place or as "flies on the
wall" in a world heretofore off limits to them. Either way, it's an entertaining experience to share
with a date. Make an appointment to see it now, or wait and be a "walk-in" for the home video
version.
