BEFORE SUNSET
If you are a fan of Before Sunrise (1994) you
have been waiting ten long years for Jesse
(Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) to
reunite and, perhaps, rekindle their brief, but
hot, affair. And just as your wait is in real time,
so is this interlude between Jesse and Celine in
Paris in 2004.

Jesse, now a successful author, is in France as
part of his book signing tour. And guess who
just happens to show up at the bookstore? If
you guessed Celine, you are correct. The busy
author's life is hectic, so they have only a short
time to talk over old times, or old time, since
they were only together once, almost ten years
ago. After they reunite at the store the
remainder of the eighty minute running time is
solely devoted to their conversation.

There is no middle ground on this one. You
either love it, or you think it is an incredible
snooze. Director Richard Linklater has watched
his love story fade and now rekindle with this
sequel. Will it ignite once again?
Brenda's Comments
What happens to a brief, but hot, affair that
has been smoldering for almost ten years?
Can Jesse and Celine pick up where they
left off? Are they the same people as they
were ten years ago? Has too much water
passed under the bridge? You'll just have to
see for yourself. If you are a romantic at
heart, you will be dying to know the
answers. If not, you'll just be dying to get it
over with. I'm a romantic myself.
Mary's Comments
Before Sunset is a very sensitive, intense
film that relies solely on dialogue to carry
its story. Interesting that the story of love is
made so clear, right down to intimate
details, with so little observable action. A
love story that only hints at acts of love and
passion. Perhaps appreciated more by the
ladies in the audience than the men.
