BEYOND THE SEA

Written by Kevin Spacey, directed by Kevin Spacey and
starring Kevin Spacey, this biopic of the life of Bobby
Darin will hit right home with the Baby Boomers. Two
hours of uninterrupted nostalgia can't be bad.
Especially when Bobby Darin is played by such a talent
as Mr. Spacey. The lovely, Mrs. Bobby Darin, Sandra
Dee (Kate Bosworth) makes an interesting subject as
well. One cannot help wonder how much of their
marriage is contrived for the story and how much is
historically accurate.
A young Bobby (William Ullrich) takes a look back on
the life and accomplishments of Bobby Darin, the
performer, the man. From the bobbysoxer hit "Splish,
Splash," through the successful "Mack the Knife"
years and beyond, we are treated to a voyeuristic peak
into the life of a very talented performer who died an
untimely, but predictable, death.
John Goodman does a great job as a faithful friend and
the careful business manager who sticks by Bobby
through his good and his lean years. Brenda Blethyn is
notable as Bobby's biggest fan of all.
Mary's Comment
Thoroughly entertaining! Everything works,
the casting, the "looking back" format and,
most of all, the music. Kevin Spacey brings
Bobby Darin back to life, if only for a few
hours. See it and take a trip back in time.
Then, rush out and buy the soundtrack.
Brenda's Comment
A fan of biographies, I went in with high
expectations and was not at all
disappointed. A short life, but an interesting
one, filled with passion and energy,
enfolded before us. The soundtrack was
simply great, and definitely qualifies as a
pleasant trip down Memory Lane. Don't
miss this one if you are fifty or older.
