BIRTH
Director Jonathan Glazer works with an
impressive cast to present a disturbing mystery
for us to solve for ourselves. The widowed Anna
(Nicole Kidman) still mourns her husband's death
after ten long years. And though she is on the
cusp of a new life as the wife of Joseph (Danny
Huston), her feelings about the past are still
unsettled.
Suddenly a small boy named Sean (Cameron
Bright) enters Anna's life and claims to be the
reincarnation of her deceased husband. At first
rejecting the idea as preposterous, she begins to
listen to his tale of rebirth. As puzzling as it
seems, Anna convinces herself that the claim is
valid.
Now the question is, how might they handle their
age difference and get on with their lives as
husband and wife. Unfortunately, there are no
right answers to this very personal
dilemma/drama from New Line Cinema, only
questions.

Brenda's Comments
A very strange romantic tale of two lovers
who are out of time, awaits you. Be
expecting a plot that is never satisfactorily
tied up. Also look forward to some very fine
acting by all of the principals. Lauren Bacall
is still up to speed in her role of Eleanor and
Anne Heche's Clara is superb. All is first
rate, but the story is quite strange and
leaves us wondering just what went on in
that brief interlude before Anna's marriage
to Joseph.
Mary's Comments
Going in expecting a mystery/thriller, the
story caught me off guard. Although
beautifully executed by a talented cast, it
left me rather cold. Nicole Kidman is great
as the hauntingly, bewildered widow. Also
at their best are Anne Heche and Lauren
Bacall. Young Cameron Bright is a standout,
especially considering the content of the
story and his young age. A commanding
musical score makes a fine backdrop. All in
all, tough, I would rather have had a
definitive ending.
