BRIDE & PREJUDICE
Move over Jane Austin, your story of love
has a new setting and a fresh, exotic
Eastern flavor. Director Gurinder Chadha
("Bend It Like Beckham") waves her magic
wand and presents us with a Bollywood
treasure, complete with spectacular,
impromptu singing and dancing sequences
that are like no other.

Basically the story of the beautiful,
opinionated Lalita Bakshi (Aishwarya Rai)
and her romance with American
businessman Wil Darcy (Martin Henderson),
the film manages to maneuver us through an
intricate path of misunderstandings and
misconceptions, of pride and prejudice. But,
in the end true love conquers all, and with
quite a flourish.

Traditional Indian social customs are
beautifully, and sometimes comically,
portrayed for a multicultural audience.
Mary's comments
Miramax has another hit on its hands, and
there's no cookie cutter feel to its appeal. The
Bollywood style is all its own, although
sometimes reminiscent of the musical
spectaculars of the 1950’s. The soap opera
overtones to the plot will delight fans of daytime
television. A refreshing new genre for the
American audience, it adds choices to our
already full platter of entertainment offerings.
Be sure to stay for the out takes, they're a hoot.
Brenda's comments
BRIDE is my first Bollywood production, and I
must say, "I'm still in shock."  Such over-the-top
musical numbers caught me off guard, but in a
good way. What a fun style of film! Finding a
niche in the mainstream American market
might take awhile, but I'm sure they can dance
their way in the door.
