THE CHORUS (Les Choristes)
An uplifting movie about a schoolmaster's attempt
to elevate his young charges from a dismal,
restricted life at a reform school to the freedom of
spirit that music can bring to their souls.
Clement Matthew (Gerard Jung) has an
appointment to teach the unfortunate boys at a
drab, charity boarding school, but he has no idea of
the challenges that lie ahead. Set around the end of
W.W.II, some of his students are war orphans,
some abandoned, and others, simply, young
criminals.
The school turns out to be a terrible, restrictive,
abusive environment run by a master whose soul is
so dead, he doesn't see the harm of his ways. The
faculty is weak and quite willing to maintain the
status quo. That is, until Mr. Mathieu attempts to
reach the boys through music, a boys' choir.
Filmed in French, with English subtitles. The story is
so absorbing, and the acting so fine that you will not
miss any of the nuances that are sometimes lost in
translation.
Mary’s comments
Wow! What a positive experience. Some
may say it's a bit too positive, leaning on the
sappy, but not I. To me it is a great
reinforcement of all the ideals of my youth.
One man makes a difference. In this case,
fine directing by Christophe Barratier and a
suburb cast make all the difference in the
world.
Brenda’s comments
A relatively short film, about an hour and a
half, "The Chorus" is brimming with good
feelings about life and the spirit of man.
Certainly one of the most positive film
experiences I've experienced in the last
few years. The score is magnificent and
original, by Bruno Colais. The boy who does
the soprano solos, Jean-Baptiste Maunier,
does indeed have not only "the face of an
angel," but a voice to match. Inspiring.
