COACH CARTER
A prosperous businessman (Samuel L.
Jackson) with inner-city roots returns to his old
high school to coach the basketball team and
try to make a difference in the lives of the
young players. Based on the exploits of a real
man back in 1999, this urban tale of the
triumph of Ken Carter's spirit over a sea of
adversity will leave you feeling good about him
and his work with inner-city youth.
After working his team hard, earning their
respect, instilling pride and entering a winning
season, Coach Carter suspends his whole
team from competing until their academics are
up to snuff. Rather than being a popular move,
he is severely criticized for his actions by the
community that he is attempting to uplift.
Predictable, but very emotionally charged,
situations develop that will keep you watching
that score board until the very end.
Brenda's Comments
A fine tale of triumph over adversity.
Jackson is believable as the hard-nosed
coach and mentor to a tough crowd of
young men. He doesn't try to make it look
too easy, either. The fact that things work
out as well as they do is a feather in the cap
of the real Coach Carter whom Mark
Schwahn and John Gatins do justice to in
their well-written script. No punches are
pulled
Mary's Comments
Powerful, but a little too predictable.
Samuel L. Jackson is superb as the
demanding coach who cuts no slack, for
anyone, not even his own son. All the
supporting cast of young, urban basketball
players did a fine, believable job, thus,
capturing the audience's attention
immediately. The fact that the story has its
basis in fact greatly adds to its appeal.
