CONNIE AND CARLA
When two Chicago lounge entertainers, Connie
(Nia Vardalos) and Carla (Toni Collette), witness
a mafia hit, their only option is to flee and go
under deep cover. Two boyfriends have to be left
behind, as the girls run for their lives.
Well-versed in the costume and make-up arts,
Connie and Carla stumble on to the perfect
career for putting their talents to work.

They become drag queen entertainers in Los
Angeles. Sometimes you just cant keep a good
act down, and the girls are an over night
success. But, what's good for the ego doesn't
always make for a good cover, and soon the mob
is hot on their trail. Can the girls successfully
elude the ruthless Russian killer turned dinner
theater aficionado?

If things aren't tangled enough, Connie finds a
love interest (David Duchovny) in LA, and
confuses the poor guy until he questions his own
feelings and sexuality. Falling for a drag queen is
not on his agenda, and, fortunately for him, it's
not in the stars.
Brenda’s comments
In spite of the fact that the story is not too
original, it's not a total disaster. Cute
musical routines and great audience
reactions keep things moving along at a
pretty good clip. Light and somewhat
satisfying, this is a pleasant way to spend
an evening. Peaches and Cream played by
Stephen Spinella and Alec Mapa make a
most interesting couple.
Mary’s comments
An obvious take off on Victor, Victoria with
a little Some Like It Hot thrown in for good
measure. Written by Nia Vardalos, this tale
of two desperate ladies in distress is
somewhat of a one trick pony as the two
perform act after act, song after song, in
drag, with elaborate costumes and make-
up. Entertaining and with a few good
laughs, this film is loaded with good
character actors who sometimes steal the
show.
