CONSTANTINE

Even if you are not familiar with the comic book
“Hellblazer”, if you are up for some very
sophisticated demonic action sequences,
you'll enjoy this two hour visit to Hell and back.
John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) has some
history to live down. And it's that shady past
that forces him to carefully walk the line
between Heaven and Hell.
Constantine, a detective of the demonic
supernatural, finds a colleague in Angela
(Rachael Weisz) who is investigating her
sister's mysterious death. His ability to
descend into Hell makes it possible for Angela
to piece together the scenario of her sister's
demise.
Another strand of the movie revolves around a
deal made between Heaven and Hell for control
of the world, but that's a whole other story.
Lest it be said that the Devil really wants John
Constantine.
The writing credits go primarily to Jamie
Delano and Garth Ennis for their work with the
“Hellblazer” comic series. Directed by Francis
Lawrence, this supernatural thriller is packed
with state of the art special effects.
Mary's comments
First let me mention that I am not a reader
of “Hellblazer” comics. However, a rather
confusing premise is nicely countered by
absolutely great effects. The contrasting
scenery is wonderfully imaginative, as a
comic world should be. True followers of
“Hellblazer” comics have told me that it's
not true to the story, but it's quite a
spectacle in its own right.
Brenda's comments
I, too, am unfamiliar with the comic book,
but I don't think it ruined the movie for me.
The Good vs. Evil plot is simple, but the
details are a bit cloudy. The struggle is
exhausting as Constantine must battle evil
for the duration. Impressive visuals make a
somewhat interesting movie come alive.
