DEAR FRANKIE

As a tender drama of a mother's love and devotion to her
young son, this film ranks way at the top. Young Frankie,
deaf son of Lizzie (Emily Mortimer), has been fatherless
most of his life. Since leaving Frankie’s father years ago,
Lizzie has concocted a tale of a sailor-father who is aboard
the ship HMS Accra, and is perpetually at sea. Apparently
Frankie is comfortable with this explanation, since he
receives regular correspondence from his father telling of
his adventures in exotic places around the globe.
Of course, the letters are all the work of Lizzie and not an
adventuring sailor-dad.
Then one morning an ominous cloud blows over the Scottish
harbor town of Lizzie and Frankie, when rumors that the
HMS Accra will be docking there reach their ears. Both have
very different reactions to the news. Frankie’s eager
anticipation and joy are countered with Lizzie’s regret and
dread. Can Lizzie manage to produce the loving father figure
that Frankie years for? Please see it and find out for
yourself. It's a winner all the way around!
Although it's been a little slow to be released, this fine
product of director Shona Auerbach is a jewel to behold. The
writing credits go to Andrea Gibb who certainly deserves a
pat on the back for this touching story of love. A superb cast
and a tender, believable story result in a fine piece of work.
And thanks to Miramax Films for getting it out there.
