DE-LOVELY
The life American composer Cole Porter (Kevin
Kline) is spotlighted in this delightful (de-lovely)
tale of his colorful lifestyle and musical triumphs.
The story is told in a long flashback in which a
very elderly Porter and a companion, aptly
named Gabe (Jonathan Pryce), review his
sometimes checkered past with all of its joys
and sorrows. Perhaps the greatest joy being his
devoted wife and his inspiration, Linda (Ashley
Judd).
Director Irwin Winkler makes great use of all of
the Cole Porter hits without quite turning it into a
musical. It remains primarily a drama, liberally
peppered with songs. Watch carefully for such
notables as Alanis Morissette, Elvis Costello,
Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, and Robbie Williams
belting out some of Porters greatest hits.
The MPAA rating is PG-13 for sexual content.

Brenda's Comment
This is a story rich in great songs and
energetic dance routines from the twenties
and thirties. Music is carefully blended into
the storyline so that its presence seems a
natural part of the tale, and never in any
way contrived. Ashley Judd does a fine job
with her role as wife to a true musical
genius who must either deal with his ways,
or be left behind. Very fine drama as well as
a memorable score.
Mary's Comment
A celebration of Cole Porter's life and
times, this film will keep your toes tapping
for the duration. With a running time of just
over two hours, you will feel his life pass in
front of your eyes. And what a life! Not in
any way conventional, Porter marched to
his own drummer and it is reflected in his
lyrics. Kevin Kline is excellent as Cole
Porter, renowned American composer and
troubled soul.
