DIRTY DANCING: HAVANA NIGHTS
Katey Miller (Rene Lavan) moves to Havana, Cuba
with her family just on the cusp of revolution. All
of the signs of trouble are there, and we know
that it is just a matter of time when the American
businessmen like her father will be ushered out
of the country as Fidel Castro steps into power.
Even with the unsettled turmoil in the air Katey
has time to come out of her studious shell and
dance up a storm with native Cuban, Javier (Diego
Luna).
Naturally they have nothing in common except for
their love of dancing. In fact, if Diego didn't speak
English so well, they would probably never have
met. As it is they meet, dance, enter a big dance
contest, but don't expect me to tell you the rest.
You'll just have to see for yourself. A minor treat
is a cameo by Patrick Swayze as the dance
instructor at the fancy hotel where Katey and
other Americans are staying. Ironically it is
Patrick himself who suggests that she enter the
dance contest!
Mary
Dancing good, plot bad. No visible
chemistry exists between the two principal
characters, and that's bad when they are
supposed to be a couple. They begin worlds
apart and remain worlds apart. Javier looks
a little scruffy to be a love interest for the
well polished Katey. The cameo by Patrick
Swayze just reiterates how good the first
installment is and how weak the second
one turns out.
Brenda
The old Dirty Dancing really went up a notch
or two after this poor excuse of a sequel.
Perhaps they would be better off if it were
not mentioned in the title. It leads to
disappointment. Any expectations of a
repeat of the original are lost in the first
fifteen minutes. Enjoyable dance routines
are its only salvation. Patrick looks very fit
after twenty years or so.
