THE FINAL CUT
In the future, a new devise has been introduced
designed to appeal to new parents. A newborn
can be fitted with a chip-like devise that will
record the child's whole life, from birth to death.
Then, as a memorial of a life, the footage can be
edited by a professional into a wonderful story
of existence for all to watch at his funeral. Of
course, all the unhappy, unsavory, moments
must be deleted. This is the job of a
professional, a cutter, who zips through the
frames cutting and pasting until the perfect life
is displayed on the screen. Naturally, some
cutters are more talented than others. So a
skilled craftsman is in high demand. Alan
Harkman (Robin Williams) is one such man.
Lions Gate Films brings us this science fiction
treat deftly directed by Omar Naim, who must
surely have felt like a cutter himself as he
crafted this film. Other notables appearing are
Mira Sorvino, James Caviezel (Jesus of
Nazareth) and Genevieve Buechner.
Mary's comments
A very good premise, but it tends to move
slowly. Things speed up when the main
character makes some discoveries about
his own life and memory. Robin Williams
makes the most out of Alan Harkman.
Unusual enough to be worth seeing.
Brenda's comments
A frightening thought, to have every second
of one's life recorded, for future perusal
and editing by a stranger. And still, it's an
interesting thought. How would just that
knowledge of the implant affect your life,
knowing that your every action was
recorded in an open book? A slow moving
movie, with an interesting, if not exactly
exciting story, but it is a good conversation
starter.
