GUESS WHO
Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) is a loan officer
and he is used to running checks on
prospective clients. When his daughter
Theresa (Zoe Saklana) announces that she
has a new boyfriend, Percy does what comes
naturally, he does a background check on
him. What he turns up may not exactly fit the
description of his prospective son-in-law,
Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher).
The meeting of young Simon by the Jones
family falls flat at every turn, but the dinner
table sequence is the best. Director Kevin
Rodney Sullivan makes sure that those of us
old enough to remember "Guess Who's
Coming to Dinner" make the connection. A
little of "Meet the Parents" is present for the
younger set, as well.
Mary’s comments
Given the amount of time that has passed
since "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner,"
and the present, much of the wind has been
taken out of the sails of the premise. Still,
the story is cute and most all of the people
exiting the screening that I attended were
amused and entertained. Bernie Mac is an
appealingly funny guy.
Brenda’s comments
Not a blockbuster, but somewhat
entertaining, this takeoff of an oldie doesn't
pack much of a wallop by today's
standards. The interracial marriage topic is
not the hot topic that it once was.
