HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON (2010)
SYNOPSIS
From the studio that brought you “Shrek,”
“Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How to
Train Your Dragon.” Set in the mythical world of burly
Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by
Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of
Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in
with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon
slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he
encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow
Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point
of view. --© Dreamworks

Dreamworks is definitely giving Pixar a run for its money when it comes to CG animation and their latest
film, How to Train Your Dragon, is no exception. The film starts with a small Viking village being attacked
by dragons and the townspeople rummaging around defending their town and slaying the dragons. The
3D and CG effects are breathtaking. The town leader Stoick (voice of Gerard Butler; 300, The Ugly Truth)
is ashamed of his son, Hiccup (voice of Jay Baruchel; Knocked Up, Tropic Thunder) because, not only is
he not able to slay a dragon, he is clumsy and always makes a mess of things. Wanting to prove to his
father he is someone to be proud of, he decides to go after the biggest threat, the Night Fury. Surprisingly,
he makes contact with the legend and knocks it out of the sky damaging its tail wing. While watching the
dragon struggle to escape the quarry he has fallen into, Hiccup realizes the dragon may not be as big a
threat as the town thought. He slowly gets to know the dragon and names the Night Fury, Toothless.
Hiccups father enrolls him in dragon slaying school where he is joined by the other kids of the town;
Astrid (America Ferrera), Snotlout (Jonah Hill), Fishlegs (Christopher Mint-Plasse), and twins Tuffnut (T.J.
Miller) and Ruffnut (Kristen Wiig). While getting to know Toothless, Hiccup learns the dragon’s
weaknesses and therefore, he is able to dominate in school. Astrid becomes very suspicious and follows
him to the quarry one day. Trying to stop Astrid from spoiling his secret, he and Toothless take her on a
ride through the sky where Toothless shows them the reason the dragons attack their village. How to
Train Your Dragon is not only a remarkable 3D adventure but it also contains a touching message about
friendship and not judging a book by its cover. The characters are realistic and lovable and the storyline
is engaging. Not only will children enjoy this film, but so will parents and adults of all ages.
