ICE PRINCESS

Can a young, female, physics-geek morph
into a lovely ice skating princess? Of, course
she can. When the Disney crew is at the
helm, magical transformations such as this
are a piece of cake. And just as easily as The
Seven Dwarfs can be singing miners, Casey
Carlyle (Michelle Trachenberg) can blossom
into a beauty on ice right before our eyes. All
this change is much to the chagrin of her
feminist mom, Joan Carlyle (Joan Cusack)
who sees visions of Harvard, not sugarplums,
dancing in her daughter's future. But once the
cute, little, ice skating outfits are offered, a
new "do" is created and some grease paint is
carefully applied, young Casey goes for the
gold.
And to think, it all began as a physics project!
All the excitement and glamour, and a hint of
romance has its roots in schoolwork. Will
wonders never cease? Preteen ladies can
dream that one day they, too, may get caught
up in a dream sequence complete with a guy
as cute as Trevor Blumas, the Zamboni guy.
Director Tim Fywell makes it all seem so
possible.
The MPAA rating is G. Just about a "squeaky
clean" movie for preteen girls.
Mary's comments
A fine diversion for young girls, and still not
repugnant to adults, is evidence of the
Disney magical touch. Both mom leads are
great. Joan Cusack as the bookish,
feminist and Kim Cattrell as the once
glamorous skater both make their points.
Although stereotypical models, the
intended audience will probably have more
insights into them than was intended. Take
the girls, leave the guys at home. They'll
both thank you.
Brenda's comments
See it now. Then buy it later for a slumber
party. It's almost guaranteed to please
middle school and junior high ladies with its
fairy tale story of transformation from
Semi-Ugly Duckling to Princess. And no
frogs to kiss, just a Zamboni guy to drool
over.
