Facebook, the guilty pleasure of most teens and adults, is surrounded by lies, deception, and broken
friendships.
The Social Network is based on Ben Mezrich’s bestselling book The Accidental Billionaire
about Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin and the creation of Facebook.
 The Social Network is a
brilliantly scripted and entertaining one-sided account of how Facebook was created and the court cases
that followed its creation. Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) and Saverin (Andrew Garfield), Harvard
undergraduates, are sick of being “nerds” and want to figure out a way to get into one of the university’s
elite Final Clubs.  Zuckerberg, being a computer genius, figures he can achieve social status through the
computer and so he creates a “Hot or Not” online poll using the pictures of campus females. This poll is a
huge hit and due to the large number of students that log on Zuckerberg crashes the university’s servers.
Realizing students want to see pictures of people they know he begins developing an idea for creating
profiles and uploading pictures.  Zuckerberg knows he is on to something; however, he has no money and
he knows he will need help so he asks his friend and roommate, Eduardo Saverin to become his business
partner.  After they launch the site it is a huge hit with Harvard students.  They then decide to incorporate
other colleges, one being Stanford.  Again their site is a huge success.  Saverin wants to begin making
money on the site by advertising, but Zuckerberg thinks the site is not ready to make money yet.  Once the
site reaches Stanford it catches the eye of Napster creator, Sean Parks (Justin Timberlake).  Excited to
join the team Parks convinces Zuckerberg to move to California.  Once in California Parks and Zuckerberg
land a half a million dollar deal and Saverin flies in to sign the contracts.  Unfortunately for him, Saverin
does not read the contracts and shortly after Facebook reaches its goal of a million friends, he realizes he
has been screwed out of the company.  The story is actually told through two court cases; one is the case
between Zuckerberg and the Winklevoss twins (they claim Zuckerberg stole their idea) and the other is
between Zuckerberg and Saverin regarding Zuckerberg’s betrayal in the contracts.  The acting by Jesse
Eisenberg as the smart, socially awkward, billionaire is brilliant and his mannerisms seem fitting.  This
two hour film moves quickly and is thoroughly entertaining and sure to gather some nominations.
