THE LONGEST YARD
Paul ‘Wrecking’ Crewe (Adam Sandler) is a washed up
quarterback with a love life equally in the dumpster.  Known
as a point shaver in an important game, Crewe doesn't have
much of a following in the way of fans. So it is without much
regret that he is thrown in the slammer for stealing his
girlfriend's car and eluding capture, in an O.J.-type chase.
Unfortunately the prison has a few issues of its own to work
on, and is not a nice place to be incarcerated.

Soon after his arrival, the warden asks Crewe to help him
prepare for an inter-institutional football match.  This leads
to the formation of an inmate team that is just supposed to
be a vehicle to fire up the guard team for the big match. But,
it takes on a life of its own under the coaching prowess of
Crewe, and an old college coach, Nate Scarboro, now a
fellow inmate (Burt Reynolds), and super-arranger
Caretaker (Chris Rock).

Directed by Peter Segal, this remake does a decent job of
capturing the essence of the original. The choice of Sandler
for Crewe has been criticized, but he does a decent job of it.
Not his usual type of role, but an interesting change. Some
mighty large, even giant, pro-wrestlers are on hand to make
the game interesting.
Although primarily a comedy, there is enough drama to keep the audience interested in the fate of the
characters. The use of some of the actors from the original movie is a nice touch. Burt Reynolds is the
standout, but if you look hard, you will find others. Much time is devoted to the game itself, which is a
delight for fans of the sport, but may be a bit tedious for the rest.
