MONSTER-IN-LAW
Watch what can happen when some extra baggage, in
the form of a bothersome mother-in-law, comes along
with your package of true love. It gets very ugly, very
fast when the beautiful Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Cantilini
(Jennifer Lopez) meets Viola Fields (Jane Fonda),
imperfect mother of her perfect fiancé, Dr. Kevin Fields
(Michael Vartan). Viola the Vicious is in no mood to be
challenged, having just lost her television interview
program to a younger woman. The prospect of also
losing her son's attention is simply too much to bear
for the controlling mom.
Charlie takes what Viola dishes out, until she reaches
her boiling point, and then things get very interesting.
Personal assistant to Viola, Ruby (Wanda Sykes),
takes an unusual stance in the battle to rid the family of
its bride-to-be. A schemer of the highest degree, Viola
is a master of underhanded tricks and has no scruples
when it comes to saving her only son from marriage.
Director Robert Luketic does well with his varied cast
in this latest offering from New Line Cinema. Perhaps
the chemistry between Lopez and Vatan could have
been stronger, but Jane Fonda is well cast as the
unscrupulous, overprotective mother hen. A short film
by modern standards (1 hour and 35 minutes), the
running time is quite sufficient for the premise. Any
longer would have been quite tedious.
