Disney has finally returned to the traditional animation that built its empire.  The Princess and the Frog is
an original take on the fairytale where a princess kisses a frog and “POOF” the frog turns into a prince.  In
this tale, Tiana, a young, black, New Orleans woman working two jobs to try and make her dream come
true (which is to start her own restaurant), is serving some of her most famous pastries at Charlotte’s
costume celebration.  Charlotte, Tiana’s rich, white, childhood friend, is throwing this celebration for
Prince Nazeen from Maldonia, a prince cut off from his royal parents and looking for a quick way to make
money (hence, marry a rich female).  However earlier, the Prince runs into the “shadow man”, a voodoo
shaman who turns him into a frog and tells him he must be kissed by a princess to return human.
Charlotte dresses Tiana in one of her big, bright dresses and puts a small crown on her head and, you
guessed it, the frog prince thinks she is the princess who will make him human again.  Tiana needs more
money to open her restaurant and after meeting the frog prince he offers to give her all the money she
needs if she just kisses him and “POOF” he will be human; however, Tiana turns into a frog.  The
remainder of the movie is Tiana and Nazeen’s journey to find another shaman that will turn them back into
their human forms.  Along this journey, they meet a handful of lovable Disney originals such as; an old
lighting bug that believes a star is his girlfriend and an alligator that plays a jazz flute.  The journey is
paired with whimsical music numbers and songs composed by Randy Newman that will keep audiences
smiling as the two frogs realize what they really want out of life.  By the end of the movie tears may be
shed; however, you will leave feeling uplifted and satisfied.
