RACING STRIPES

About as family oriented a film as you can
hope for in 2005, this little story of an
accidentally abandoned baby zebra and his
rise to horse racing fame will keep the kids
entranced for the duration. Rescued in the
rain by a former racehorse trainer, Nolan
Walsh (Bruce Greenwood), the little foal
becomes the pride of daughter, Channing.
Arriving on the farm as a soaked stranger, it
isn't long before the other animals befriend
the strange little guy. Stripes is a hit in the
barnyard, which turns out to be full of
conversation that can only be deciphered by
other animals, and the audience. Among the
notables are Tucker, an elderly Shetland pony
who is a bit of a skeptic, Goose, a pelican
hiding from the Mob, Franny, an old goat, wise
beyond her species, and Lightening, a
bloodhound who seldom makes move. And, I
almost forgot the stars of the show. Buzz and
Skuzz two horse fly that turn up everywhere.
And I mean everywhere, on everything.
Stripes’ dream is to be a racehorse and he
works hard at training himself to compete.
With a little help from his friends, he gets a
spot ion the program for the big, Kentucky
race. Go Stripes!
Brenda's comments
Lots of flatulence and poo jokes for the kiddies
make for many outbursts of laughter throughout
the movie. The flies are probably the second
most memorable characters after Stripes
himself, who is darling. Somehow the periods of
dialogue between father and daughter are not as
compelling as the flies and the youngsters in the
gallery become restless quickly. But, the flies
quickly return on a pile of horse manure, and all
is right with the world
Mary's comments
How can a darling zebra foal not win the hearts
of an audience? Then, strand him helplessly in a
rain storm and you have over the top sympathy
and cuteness ratings. Every little kid in the
audience, plus a few impractical adults would
take him home. The nasty little talking flies are
a welcome relief from the treacle-laden script.
A great DVD prospect, if I could buy stock in the
home video sales, I would.
