Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) is able to once again entertain audiences with Guy Ritchie’s rendition of Sir
Conan Boyle’s Sherlock Holmes. Director Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) does not
veer far from this British literary classic in his all new 21st century take on the legendary detective. An
acceptable change is the character of Dr. John Watson (Jude Law; Cold Mountain, The Holiday). In the
past, Watson has been a naive, unworthy, almost comical partner to Holmes. In this interpretation
Watson is more of an equal to Holmes and their partnership is much deeper than in earlier versions. The
chemistry between Downey Jr. and Law is incredible and adds a special spark to the film; however,
Watson’s new girlfriend, soon to be fiancée, threatens to break up the amazing duo. Lord Blackwood
(Mark Strong; The Young Victoria, Stardust), a convicted killer who looms over London with the threat of
domination, brings Holmes the mystery he so intently craves. Even though Watson has his pre nuptials
looming in the background, he too is unable to avoid a good mystery. Rachel McAdams (The Notebook,
The Time Traveler’s Wife) plays Irene Adler, Holmes’s long-time adversary and love interest. McAdams is
able to light up the screen with her playful, yet dangerous, portrayal of Adler. Adler is also working with
another one of Holmes’s greatest adversaries, Professor Moriarty, which definitely leaves room for a
sequel. The fight scenes are outstanding and Ritchie brilliantly showcases Holmes extraordinary
deductive reasoning skills. Downey Jr. encompasses the true essence of Holmes who is lively and wild
when on a case yet, depressed and dissolute when not and his interpretation is enough to entertain
audiences. The plot line may be a little weak; however, the banter between Holmes and Watson, paired
with the remarkable chemistry of Downey Jr. and Law, will amuse audiences of all ages.
