RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011)
SYNOPSIS
A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads
to a war unlike any other -- and to the Rise of the Planet
of the Apes. The Oscar-winning visual effects team
that brought to life the worlds of Avatar and Lord of the
Rings is breaking new ground, creating a CGI ape that
delivers a dramatic performance of unprecedented
emotion and intelligence, and epic battles on which
rest the upended destinies of man and primate. -- (C)

Director Rupert Wyatt makes his first big splash with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. James Franco (127
Hours, Spiderman) plays Will Rodman, a scientist who is on the verge of monumental medical
breakthrough. That is until problems arise in the lab and all of the tested apes are euthanized, except for
one baby ape that is found in the process. Instead of euthanizing the baby, Will takes it to his home. This
is where his father, Charles (John Lithgow) is introduced. Immediately, it becomes clear that Will has an
emotional stake in his research, as his father is suffering from Alzheimer’s. Still confident about the
serum and its possibilities, Will injects his ailing father with hopes of a cure. The results are immediate,
and the next morning, Charles appears to have made a full recovery. From the beginning, the baby ape,
Caesar, displays intelligence far beyond what an average ape is capable of. It is easy to become attached
to Caesar, as he starts to display many human qualities. But his development also has its faults, as he
becomes overly protective when Charles is in an argument with his neighbor and attacks the neighbor.
This is when things go downhill for Caesar, and he is placed in a “shelter”, which might as well be jail, full
of wild apes. As expected, the facility is not run by the best of people. Brian Cox and Tom Felton play the
cruel family that makes life miserable for Caesar and his fellow inmates. Caesar's human qualities
continue to take an ugly turn as he becomes spiteful and arranges a breakout for not just himself, but
every ape in the facility. Knowing there is no way to escape with the "stupid apes", Caesar manages to
escape on his own, steals the serum from Will's house, and returns. After exposing the facility to the
serum, the apes escape and make a run for the Redwood Forest. The movie climaxes with an ape versus
human fight scene taking place on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge that will not disappoint. Caesar
played by Andy Serkis gives the best performance in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Serkis is overdue for
recognition. He has given similiar performances as Gollum in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy
and King Kong. I went in with little expection and came out wondering what city the apes will surface in
the sequel!
