Being the first action flick to hit theatres this year, Man on a Ledge, is not as bad as some of the
critics are making it out to be.  It is an action flick that is simply meant to entertain the audience
not try and contend for a spot in the 2012 Academy Awards.   With a great cast and nice plot twists
this film fulfills its intended role and is quite entertaining.  Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington;
Avatar,
Clash of the Titans
) is an ex-cop who escapes from prison to end up on the ledge of an exclusive
Manhattan Hotel professing his innocence.  A crowd quickly gathers outside and the NYPD sends
up Jack Dougherty (Edward Burns;
Saving Private Ryan, Life or Something Like it) to try and talk
Cassidy off the ledge; however, Cassidy says he will only talk with Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks;
Role Models, Definitely, Maybe).  Mercer, who is still struggling with the guilt of her last suicide
jumping and the constant berating to prove herself in a man’s world, is confused by the request
and questions the scene upon immediately entering it.  While Cassidy is begging Mercer to just
trust him and do her job we learn that Cassidy’s brother, Joey (Jamie Bell;
Flags of Our Fathers,
Jumper
) and his sexy girlfriend Angie (Spanish TV Star Genesis Rodriguez, who has two more
American films we can look forward to seeing her in; one coming out later this year,
What to
Expect When You’re Expecting
and then in the following year; Last Stand) are working with
Cassidy to help him prove he was set up by the successful real estate tycoon, David Englander (Ed
Harris;
Enemy at the Gates, Pollock ).  The plot takes many turns and is at times completely
surprising.  The chemistry and banter between Bell and Rodriguez is refreshing and believable.
While this movie won’t be nominated for any awards it does what it is meant to do:  entertain.
